March 7, 2012 The Honorable Gregory Fischer, Mayor Louisville Metro Government 537 West Jefferson Street Louisville, KY 40202 Dear Mayor Greg Fischer: Please issue the Notice to Proceed on the Brownsboro Road Reconfiguration. Despite the lack of any bicycle facilities in this project, the Board of Bicycling for Louisville unanimously believes that the project is a worthwhile step forward in active transportation and social justice. Our members have attended dozens of public meetings over the last four years discussing or touching on the project. Two of these meetings have had better public attendance than a typical ORBP public meeting - a project with 7,250 times the budget! We feel that opportunities for the public to comment have been ample, to say the least. We believe that road diets make roads safer for all users - including motorists - and that they enhance neighborhoods by making the streets more walkable. Encouraging people to get out of their cars and use alternative transportation can actually help local businesses and contribute to a healthier city and better air quality. Providing residents with many options for getting around our city will make it more livable and more sustainable - qualities we know you value. Sincerely, Mary Beth Brown President, Board of Directors Bicycling for Louisville |
