Dear Alderman Magre and Alderwoman Ward-Pugh:

As President of the Clifton Community Council, I am writing to express our strong support for the installation of a sidewalk, with tactile strips at the curb cuts and street crossings, on the north side of Brownsboro Road at Clifton between Rally’s and Ewing.  Although this area is technically outside Clifton, this sidewalk would be vital to the safety and well-being of our residents as well as those of Clifton Heights.  We understand that the feasibility of such a sidewalk is being studied and appreciate this effort.

Clifton has many pedestrians, including members of one of the largest communities of visually impaired persons in the country.  Many of our pedestrians use the Chicken Steps to get down to Brownsboro Road from the end of Vernon.  Since it is impossible to cross Brownsboro at the Clifton light, pedestrians have a long walk around to the light at Haldeman to get to the businesses northwest of Clifton.  On the other hand, they must walk to the Ewing light to cross to get to businesses to northeast of Clifton (although there is no sidewalk it is more navigable).  Of course, they must cross Brownsboro twice to get from one to the other.

A few months ago, one of our visually impaired elderly residents found herself in a terrifying and dangerous situation because of this problem.  She had been told by mistake that there was a sidewalk on the north side of Brownsboro, so she crossed at the Clifton light to walk west to Fantastic Sam’s to have her hair done.  Fortunately, no one was hurt.

We know that creating this sidewalk will be an engineering and financial challenge, but it is important to Clifton residents.  Moreover, the installation of the light at Clifton, which we do appreciate, has made this sidewalk project even more crucial.

Thank you for your concern for our neighborhoods and for your serious consideration of this request.

Respectfully submitted,

Pam Vetter, President
Clifton Community Council
